University of Liverpool strengthens global dental education links at Ghana International Dental Scientific Conference 2026

Earlier this month, Dr Jumoke Adeyemi travelled to Accra to represent the University of Liverpool at the Ghana International Dental Scientific Conference 2026 (GIDSC).

This year’s conference, held in partnership with University of Ghana Dental School, focused on current trends in dental science, dental education, and community oral health. The event brought together clinicians, educators, researchers and trainees from across the region to explore innovation and collaboration in oral healthcare.

Ahead of the main conference programme, Dr Adeyemi met with periodontics trainees and their trainers at the University of Ghana Dental School to discuss periodontal care and the management of complex periodontal patients. Drawing on UK clinical experience, she shared perspectives on contemporary periodontal practice while also gaining insight into the unique challenges faced by dental professionals working in Ghana.

The conference officially opened with a keynote address from Professor Albert Leung Foundation Head of the School of Dentistry at the Royal College of Surgeons Ireland, University of Medicine and Health Sciences (RCSI)., who spoke on delivering a modern undergraduate dentistry curriculum through a spiral primary care approach. The wider programme included presentations on aesthetic dentistry, advances in diagnostics, frugal innovation, digital implant placement, and Ghana’s national oral health strategy.

As part of the practical teaching programme, Dr Adeyemi delivered a hands-on workshop for dental nurses and technicians focusing on periodontal instrument set-up, identification and maintenance. The session provided practical guidance on best practice approaches to instrument handling and long-term maintenance protocols.

On the conference’s final day, Dr Adeyemi led a series of workshops in collaboration with  Dr Clement Seeballuck of  the University of Dundee  exploring alternative simulation tools for dental education in emerging countries. The sessions highlighted innovative and adaptive teaching approaches designed to support sustainability in dental training. Participants explored accessible methods for developing manual dexterity skills, alongside tools and techniques that can support remote and blended learning environments.

During the visit, the University of Liverpool also donated equipment to the University of Ghana Dental School, reinforcing the University’s commitment to sustainability, international partnership and the advancement of dental education worldwide.
